‘I’m no Bond. I’m a banker on the move’

.........Change is always difficult. What we are trying to get is the maximum effect with minimum change. Our aim is to identify strengths and weaknesses. Plug weaknesses, and in a very small way bring in new talent. But we want to keep it minimal because this is a home-grown organization and we want to keep it that way for the most part. The RBI has got a great tradition, a great history, and can we build on that to make it fit to meet the challenges? As we grow into one of the top few economies, we will need a first-rate central bank to take care of the macroeconomic challenges and represent India at the international fora. ..........

A very enlightening interview, even for those who may not be closely following the happenings in RBI and the Indian financial sector. Dr Rajan has taken pains to explain the homework he has done since 2008 which has prepared him for his present assignment, While a section of the hostile media may continue to speculate on RBI Governor’s intentions when he speaks out each word or take any policy initiative-One columnist has gone to the extent of commenting that Dr Rajan is using his position to move ‘up’ to become IMF Chief- last one year has not given room to doubt Dr Rajan’s firm grip of India’s needs and his earnestness in making efforts to project a better image of the country’s strengths.
